Austrian folklore is alive, and not just for tourists. The right is thrilled, but secretly prefers oysters. Intellectuals are embarrassed, but secretly speak dialect. Should one embrace the local or reject it?

Thorsten Mense is a journalist, sociologist, and writer. He has published extensively on the resurgence of ultranationalism in Germany, including Kritik des Nationalismus (2016, Schmetterling Verlag), and is a member of the Forum für kritische Rechtsextremismusforschung (FKR).

Hans-Peter Weingand is a historian and LGBTQ+ activist. He has published on local historical issues, including volumes on the Austrian Communist Party in 1934, queer history, and the poet Peter Rosegger.
