Clara Ianni

Resurrection (2024)
Performance

For the first time, steirischer herbst and the City of Graz are jointly awarding the Werner Fenz Grant for Art in Public Space, whose 2024 winner is Clara Ianni.

Her Resurrection is a multifaceted, genre-defying work. It consists of a ritual at the Graz Mausoleum with newly composed choir music, and a procession toward Stadtpark, where, in culmination, an ephemeral, performative monument is created.

The project focuses on props and backdrops from depots of Graz theaters that were once produced to represent nature. These trees, stones, flowers, and clouds are usually stored and forgotten, waiting to be discarded sooner or later. Ianni brings them back to nature to create a political and environmental fiction in which nothing dies and humans and nonhumans become comrades.

The work as a whole explores the relationship between nature, capitalism, and religion, focusing on exhaustion and regeneration. In the current context of political, economic, and ecological collapse, Ianni’s work seeks to imagine how to live after exhaustion, after the end, how to regenerate and how to resurrect.

Clara Ianni (1987, São Paulo, Brazil) is an interdisciplinary artist dealing with the relationship between politics and history, particularly in the contemporary Brazilian context. In her work, she proposes critical approaches to historical narratives, power structures, and institutional frameworks, seeking to instigate new ways of living. Her work has been shown at the New Museum Triennial, New York (2021); the 31st and 34th Biennial of São Paulo (2014, 2020); MAAT, Lisbon (2017); and the Jakarta Biennial (2015), among others. Ianni lives in São Paulo.
