Ruhail Qaisar & Katarina Gryvul
Namkhay Rtsima (Spine of the Sky)

Concert

The artist and musician Ruhail Qaisar has created a new piece as part of a Province of Styria artist residency guided by his mentor, Katarina Gryvul. At ORF musikprotokoll 2022, the composer, violinist, and sound artist, originally from Ukraine, presented her moving piece Zemlya, based on recordings of her breathing during a panic attack following the outbreak of Russia’s war of aggression.

Qaisar’s work also deals with the “uncanny swarms of the human subconscious” and uses “sonic gestures” from his homeland of Ladakh, a region in the northern Indian Himalayas characterized by deep religiosity as well as climate change and mass tourism. Namkhay Rtsima is an “anti-linguistic tragedy” that conjures up phantasmagorias of processions and obsession. It draws on the power that lies in the primal physicality of mourning songs. “Soiled by time, destroyed by winds and measured in silence and lamentation. Devastation.”
