National museums are haunted houses. Often established by empires and states that long ceased to exist, they served to construct and confirm myths of victories and victimhood. Today, they are the place where former delusions of grandeur and petty grievances of the past are still at play.

A centerpiece of steirischer herbst ’24 is the exhibition Horror Patriae. In the historical building of today’s Universalmuseum Joanneum, which hosts the Neue Galerie Graz, it imagines an alternative museum of national complexes and perverse imaginaries. The exhibition combines works and artifacts from the Universalmuseum Joanneum’s various collections with works by contemporary artists (including numerous commissions). Organized into several fictitious departments, it tells stories that depart from local myth but reach out into the broader world.

Is this museum of dysfunctional and contradictory nationhood the only way to imagine a national museum in a time like ours, when patriotic sentiments are getting good press even if they have a darker side?
