Call for Festival Director


In accordance with the Hiring Act (Stellenbesetzungsgesetz), the General Assembly of steirischer herbst festival gmbh is hiring for the following position as of 1 January 2018 for the duration of five years:




Purpose of the nonprofit steirischer herbst festival gmbh based in Graz, whose shareholders are Styria Province and the City of Graz, is to plan and carry out cultural events within the scope of the steirischer herbst festival. steirischer herbst is a multi-genre festival that submits new contemporary productions to (interdisciplinary) discussion every year. The core traits of steirischer herbst are the networking of different disciplines of art (theatre, visual arts, film, literature, dance, music, architecture, performance, new media, and theory) and its self-image as a productive festival (original works, premières and commissioned works). Artistic projects are carried out with a view to a broader contemporary concept of the region and with increased participation of the local population. Observing the Festival Director’s control over programming and the accustomed quality of the programme, the aim is particularly to involve artists with ties to Styria and Graz across all genres. The steirischer herbst festival is interested in presenting local art and scientific theory and practice in confrontation with international contributions. With regard to programming, steirischer herbst also aims to focus its attention on the East and South-East on the European map. A declared goal of steirischer herbst is to carry out the majority of events in the city of Graz and in the regions of Styria.



The Festival Director is solely responsible for drawing up the programme of the annual multidisciplinary festival of contemporary art in keeping with the purpose of the steirischer herbst festival gmbh company and the cultural policy mandate of the shareholders, Styria Province and the City of Graz, and management of steirischer herbst festival gmbh on his or her own responsibility with the due care of a prudent businessperson.



Knowledge of art with experience in a wide range of disciplines of art; organisational, commercial skills and several years of – international – experience managing a cultural organisation; experience in conceiving, planning and carrying out festivals; strong affinity for contemporary art; comprehensive knowledge of the regional, national and international culture and event industry; very good regional, national and international networking with artists as well as art and cultural facilities; excellent communication skills, particularly with regard to the media and public, and negotiating skills with artists and other art and culture facilities.

Highly developed organisational, managerial and decision-making skills; readiness to take on responsibility; flexibility; willingness to travel; very good foreign language skills; good interpersonal skills and internal communication skills, ability to cooperate and work in a team and integrate.


A guideline minimum salary of €100,000.-- p.a. is set for this position, given full-time employment, subject to professional qualifications and experience.
